Cloud Assessment Services: What Moves, Where, When and at What Cost

Quick answer

Cloud assessment is the set of pre-investment studies that decide what should move to cloud, where it should run, in what order and at what cost, before any migration spend is committed. NTSPL offers twelve focused assessments, from infrastructure discovery to SAP strategy and operating model design, delivered across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud for Indian organisations.

Cloud Transformation

Cloud Assessment at a Glance

Most cloud programmes that overrun do so because of decisions taken without data: sizing on allocated capacity, waves drawn without dependencies, DR copied from on-premises, a business case that leaves out dual running, or a regulator's expectations discovered at inspection. Each of these is cheap to settle before migration and expensive to fix after it.

NTSPL's assessments decide; they do not build. Each one produces a specific artefact, a reconciled inventory, a placement matrix, a five-year TCO, a recovery tier register, a gate scorecard, with every recommendation traceable to measured data or a signed owner decision. Organisations can commission one assessment to settle a single question or combine several into a full pre-migration programme of six to ten weeks.

Twelve Assessments in Four Decision Areas

Estate and portfolio facts

Establish what actually exists before anything is decided: every server and dependency from 30 days of measurement, every application with an owner and downtime window, and every database with its engine, licence and compatibility. These three assessments become the system of record the rest of the programme uses.

Placement and economics

Decide where each workload runs and whether the move pays. Placement scores clouds, regions and edge options per workload; the TCO compares five-year cloud cost with an on-premises refresh; the SAP assessment settles RISE, IaaS or staying on ECC against the 2027 deadline.

Risk, resilience and connectivity

Design the controls a workload needs before it lands. Security and compliance maps controls to RBI, SEBI, IRDAI, CERT-In and DPDP duties; backup and DR assigns recovery tiers; the network assessment sizes VPN or dedicated links from measured flows and latency.

Organisation and modernization readiness

Check that the organisation can run cloud and knows where to invest. Readiness tests 42 go/no-go gates, modernization screening assigns a 6R disposition to every application, and the operating model assessment designs the CCoE, RACI and skills plan.

What a Completed Assessment Programme Changes

●Cloud sizing accuracy — Target capacity based on P95 measured utilisation typically lands 30-50 percent below allocation-based estimates and within 15 percent of actual post-migration use.
●Wave plan stability — Owner-confirmed move groups and recorded blackout windows mean early waves run without re-planning caused by unknown dependencies.
●Business case credibility — A finance-signed on-premises baseline and like-for-like cloud scope produce a TCO the audit committee accepts at first review.
●Regulatory exposure closed before go-live — High-severity control gaps and recovery tiers are designed into the landing zone before regulated workloads move.

How Assessments Run on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud

AWS →

On AWS, assessments use Migration Evaluator for utilisation and business cases, AWS Transform for VMware, .NET and mainframe analysis, DMS Schema Conversion for database code, Resilience Hub for recovery policies and the AWS Cloud Adoption Framework for readiness. Targets are priced in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Microsoft Azure →

On Azure, the Azure Migrate appliance provides agentless discovery and dependency analysis, plus server, SQL, web app and business case assessments. Readiness and operating model work follows the Cloud Adoption Framework, and targets are priced in Central India, South India and West India with Hybrid Benefit modelled where eligible.

Google Cloud →

On Google Cloud, Migration Center handles discovery, RVTools imports and TCO reports, the Database Migration Assessment tool profiles Oracle and SQL Server, and the Google Cloud Adoption Framework and Well-Architected Framework guide readiness. Targets are priced in Mumbai and Delhi.

Cloud Assessment in Practice: Industry Scenarios

Cloud Assessment: Frequently Asked Questions

Which cloud assessment should we start with?

Start with the question that blocks a decision. If you lack reliable estate data, begin with infrastructure discovery, because placement, TCO and DR tiering all depend on it. If a refresh or contract deadline is driving the programme, run discovery and TCO together. Regulated entities should add the security and compliance assessment before committing wave dates.

Can several assessments run at the same time?

Yes, and they usually should. Discovery runs for 30 days in the background while application, DR and security interviews proceed, so a combined programme covering five or six assessments typically completes in eight to ten weeks rather than the sum of their individual durations.

Are the assessments tied to one cloud provider?

No. Each assessment is provider-neutral and maps findings to AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. Where a provider has already been chosen, we use its native tooling and region pricing; where it has not, the workload placement assessment compares them with explicit criteria.

How do the assessments reflect Indian regulation?

Each assessment applies the rules relevant to its question: data residency and DPDP Act 2023 duties in placement and database work, RBI, SEBI and IRDAI outsourcing and governance directions in security and readiness, CERT-In's 6-hour reporting and 180-day log retention in security and network design.

What is the difference between an assessment and a migration?

An assessment decides and produces documents, registers and models; it changes nothing in production. Migration builds landing zones and moves workloads. Keeping them separate means the decision is made on evidence before build contracts and commitments are signed.

Can hyperscaler funding cover part of the assessment?

Often. AWS, Microsoft and Google run programmes that fund parts of migration assessments for qualifying estates. NTSPL checks eligibility at the start and handles the application, but the scope and findings remain independent of any funding source.
