Application Modernization: Re-architecting Legacy Apps Step by Step
Application modernization is the deliberate re-architecture of applications already in production, on-premises or in the cloud, so they release faster, scale by component and cost less to change. NTSPL assesses chosen applications at code level, then rebuilds them through APIs, microservices, containers, serverless, open-source databases, delivery pipelines, observability and embedded AI, one measured step at a time.
Application Modernization at a Glance
Moving an application to the cloud changes where it runs, not how it is built. Many Indian enterprises that rehosted between 2020 and 2024 now run the same monoliths, Oracle licences, release nights and VB6 consoles on cloud VMs, with a larger bill. Modernization tackles the constraints inside the application itself: shared databases that block team independence, stored procedures holding business rules, front ends that need Citrix, ESB flows nobody can change, and batch jobs sized for peaks that last an hour a month.
NTSPL's application modernization practice works one seam at a time. A code-level assessment picks the first changes with the best value-to-risk ratio; each later step, whether an API facade, an extracted service, a converted database or a canary pipeline, ships to production on its own and is measured against a baseline. We deliver on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud in Indian regions, with DPDP Act 2023 data handling and CERT-In logging designed in from the first sprint rather than retrofitted before an audit.
Twelve modernization capabilities in four tracks
Assess and open up the core
Decide what to change with a code-level assessment of one to five applications, then expose locked-in capability safely: versioned partner APIs over legacy cores, and event-driven integration that replaces ESB flows, nightly file drops and point-to-point database links with traceable, replayable messaging.
Modernization Assessment
Code-level study of 1-5 critical apps: coupling, data model, runtime traces and change history, delivering target patterns and a costed backlog in 6 weeks.
API Enablement
container legacy cores, SOAP services and databases in versioned REST APIs with gateways, OAuth, quotas and a developer portal for partners and channels.
Cloud Native Integration
Replace ESBs, nightly file transfers and point-to-point links with event buses, managed queues, CDC and iPaaS flows that are traceable and replayable.
Re-architect the runtime
Split monoliths into domain-owned services with strangler routing and per-service data, package applications into hardened containers, rebuild ageing Kubernetes clusters on managed services with GitOps, and move batch, document and bursty workloads to event-driven serverless functions and workflows that scale to zero.
Microservices Modernization
Re-architect monoliths into domain-owned microservices using strangler routing, per-service data, outbox events and sagas, extracted one seam at a time.
Containerization
Package Java, .NET and PHP apps into hardened, minimal container images: externalise state and config, fix 12-factor gaps and pick the right runtime.
Kubernetes Modernization
Move self-managed or outdated Kubernetes to EKS, AKS or GKE: version catch-up, Gateway API migration, GitOps, autoscaling and multi-tenant guardrails.
Serverless Modernization
Rebuild cron jobs, file processing and spiky endpoints on Lambda, Azure Functions and Cloud Run with workflows, queues and costs that track real demand.
Modernize data engines and front ends
Exit Oracle and SQL Server licences by converting schemas, PL/SQL and T-SQL to managed PostgreSQL with dual-engine replay and short cutovers, and replace Forms, VB6 and WebForms screens with web and mobile journeys built on design systems and backend-for-frontend APIs.
Managed Database Modernization
Move Oracle or SQL Server to Aurora PostgreSQL, AlloyDB or Azure PostgreSQL: schema conversion, PL/SQL refactoring, dual-engine replay and fast cutover.
Legacy UI Modernization
Replace Oracle Forms, VB6, PowerBuilder and WebForms screens with React or Angular front ends, design systems and BFF APIs, migrated journey by journey.
Deliver, observe and add intelligence
Engineer pipelines that release daily with canary rollback and audit evidence, instrument applications with OpenTelemetry and journey SLOs so incidents are diagnosed in minutes, and embed governed AI features such as extraction, triage and drafting directly into existing business workflows.
DevSecOps & CI CD
Engineer CI/CD with trunk-based flow, preview environments per pull request, canary and blue-green releases, OIDC deploys and DORA metrics on any cloud.
Observability Modernization
Replace siloed monitoring with OpenTelemetry instrumentation, distributed tracing, journey SLOs and a log pipeline sized for CERT-In retention and cost.
AI Enablement
Embed document extraction, classification and drafting into existing apps through a governed AI gateway with redaction, evaluations and human review.
What modernization should measurably change
How we modernize on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud
On AWS we modernize with Amazon ECS on Fargate and EKS for services, Lambda, Step Functions and EventBridge for event-driven work, Aurora PostgreSQL with DMS Schema Conversion for Oracle exits, API Gateway for partner APIs, Bedrock for embedded AI, and CloudWatch Application Signals for SLOs, usually in the Mumbai and Hyderabad regions.
On Azure we use Container Apps and AKS for services, Functions, Durable Functions, Service Bus and Logic Apps Standard for integration and BizTalk exits, Azure Database for PostgreSQL for engine changes, API Management for partner APIs, Microsoft Foundry for AI features, and Azure Monitor with OpenTelemetry, across Central, South and West India.
On Google Cloud we build on Cloud Run and GKE, Pub/Sub, Workflows and Eventarc for event-driven designs, AlloyDB with Database Migration Service conversion workspaces for Oracle exits, Apigee for API programmes, Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform for AI features, and Cloud Monitoring SLOs, primarily in the Mumbai and Delhi regions.

Application Modernization: Frequently Asked Questions
How is application modernization different from cloud migration?
Migration changes where an application runs, through rehosting or light replatforming, usually under a data-centre deadline. Modernization changes how the application is built: its architecture, data engine, interfaces, delivery pipeline and telemetry. Many clients migrate first to exit hardware, then modernize the few systems where release speed, licence cost or scale actually limit the business.
Where should a modernization programme start?
With one to three applications where a measurable business constraint exists, such as a licence renewal, a release bottleneck or a partner backlog, and a code-level assessment of those applications. Starting with a platform build or a company-wide microservices mandate, without a first application to prove value, is the most common way programmes lose momentum.
How long does modernization take and how is it funded?
Individual steps take 6-20 weeks: an API facade, a container wave, a database conversion or a pipeline rollout. Programmes for a core application usually run 9-18 months as a sequence of such steps. We recommend funding per step against agreed metrics rather than one large upfront budget, so each tranche is released on evidence.
Do we have to modernize every application?
No. Most portfolios have a handful of systems where modernization pays back and many where rehosting, retiring or leaving them alone is cheaper. Modernizing stable, rarely changed applications adds cost and risk without benefit, so we recommend stopping once the remaining legacy components are stable and seldom touched.
How do you manage risk when changing production systems?
Every change is incremental and reversible: strangler routing with per-route rollback, dual reads before data cutovers, reverse replication during database fallback windows, canary releases with automatic aborts, and feature flags for new screens. Nothing switches over in one weekend unless it has been rehearsed with production-sized data at least twice.
How does modernization handle DPDP Act 2023 and CERT-In obligations?
We design them in. Personal data is concentrated in owning services, minimised in APIs and events, masked in test environments and redacted from telemetry. Logs are retained for 180 days in India to meet CERT-In directions, and workloads run in Indian regions, with RBI, SEBI or IRDAI controls mapped where the client is regulated.
