BigQuery Data Analytics, Streaming Pipelines & Looker BI Services
BigQuery data analytics is Google Cloud's serverless warehouse and lakehouse approach, in which BigQuery stores and queries data, Pub/Sub and Dataflow feed it, Dataplex and BigLake govern it, and Looker presents it. NTSPL designs schemas, pipelines, slot reservations and semantic models so Indian marketing, energy and retail teams get trusted numbers at a cost they can forecast.

The Problem BigQuery (Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus editions) and BigQuery BI Engine Solve
BigQuery makes it easy to load anything and query it at once, which is exactly how warehouses get expensive and untrusted. We regularly find unpartitioned event tables of 40 TB scanned in full by a dashboard refreshing every 15 minutes, five different definitions of revenue across Looker Studio reports, and on-demand billing that jumps by lakhs in the month an analyst discovers SELECT *. Streaming pipelines add their own failure modes: duplicate events, late data and schemas that drift when an app team adds a field. The real problem is designing storage layout, ingestion semantics, governance and compute model so numbers are correct and cost per query is predictable.
NTSPL designs from the questions backward. We agree the 20 to 30 metrics the business runs on, model them once in LookML or BigQuery views, and lay out tables with partitioning and clustering that match those queries. Ingestion uses Pub/Sub BigQuery subscriptions or Dataflow where transformation is needed, and Datastream for database change capture. Then we choose between on-demand and BigQuery editions with autoscaling reservations using two weeks of real INFORMATION_SCHEMA job data, not guesses.
When BigQuery, Dataflow and Looker Are the Right Analytics Platform for Your Data
Signals that point to data & analytics on Google Cloud
- Your on-prem or self-managed warehouse needs a hardware refresh, or nightly loads no longer finish before business hours.
- Finance and marketing present different revenue or ROAS numbers for the same week.
- BigQuery on-demand charges vary by more than 30 percent month to month without a matching change in business activity.
- You need sub-minute visibility on streaming data from apps, devices or plant SCADA, not next-morning reports.
- Analysts export CSVs from five systems into spreadsheets every Monday to build the same management report.
- You hold customer personal data in analytics and must apply DPDP Act purpose limitation and masking by role.
When a different approach is better
- If the workload is high-frequency point lookups and updates for an application, such as a user profile service, use Cloud SQL, AlloyDB, Spanner or Bigtable instead of BigQuery.
- If your total analytical data is under 50 GB with a handful of users, a Cloud SQL read replica with Looker Studio is simpler and cheaper than a full warehouse design.
- If you need single-digit millisecond lookups over time-series for live device screens, serve them from Bigtable and keep BigQuery for history and analysis.
Google Cloud Analytics Building Blocks: BigQuery, BI Engine, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, Dataplex, BigLake and Looker
| Service | Role in the architecture | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| BigQuery (Standard, Enterprise and Enterprise Plus editions) | Serverless columnar warehouse storing managed tables and querying them with SQL, billed either per TiB scanned on demand or per slot-hour through edition reservations with autoscaling. | Analytical data is above a few hundred GB, concurrency is variable, and you do not want to size or patch warehouse clusters. |
| BigQuery BI Engine | In-memory acceleration layer that caches frequently queried table data for sub-second dashboard response in Looker, Looker Studio and other BI tools. | Dashboards on a few hot tables need sub-second response for hundreds of users and repeated scans are driving slot or on-demand cost. |
| Pub/Sub and Dataflow | Pub/Sub carries event streams with at-least-once delivery and can write directly to BigQuery through subscriptions; Dataflow runs Apache Beam pipelines for windowing, deduplication, enrichment and exactly-once processing. | Events from apps, devices or SCADA must land within seconds, or need joins, windows and late-data handling before they are usable. |
| Datastream | Serverless change data capture from MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle and SQL Server into BigQuery with low-latency replication of inserts, updates and deletes. | Operational databases such as ticketing or ERP must be analysed in near real time without nightly dumps or load on the primary. |
| Dataplex Universal Catalog and BigLake | Dataplex provides cataloguing, lineage, data quality scans and profiling across BigQuery and Cloud Storage; BigLake tables let BigQuery query open formats such as Apache Iceberg in Cloud Storage with fine-grained security. | Data spans warehouse tables and a lake, and teams need to find, trust and govern it from one place. |
| Looker and Looker Studio | Looker defines metrics once in a LookML semantic model with governed explores and embedded analytics; Looker Studio provides lightweight self-service reports, with Looker Studio Pro adding team management. | Teams disagree on metric definitions (use Looker), or need quick shareable reports on a few curated tables (use Looker Studio). |
| BigQuery ML | Trains and runs models such as ARIMA_PLUS time-series forecasting, boosted trees, logistic regression, k-means and anomaly detection with SQL inside BigQuery. | Analysts need forecasts, propensity scores or anomaly flags on warehouse data without exporting it to a separate ML platform. |
Streaming and batch lakehouse on BigQuery with governed Looker semantic layer
Streaming and batch lakehouse on BigQuery with governed Looker semantic layer
Events arrive through Pub/Sub and are processed by Dataflow, while database changes stream in through Datastream, both landing in partitioned raw BigQuery datasets in asia-south1. Scheduled SQL transformations build curated and mart layers, Dataplex scans quality and lineage, and Looker queries the marts through BI Engine with metrics defined once in LookML.

BigQuery Engineering Decisions: Partitioning, Editions and Reservations, Streaming Semantics and the Semantic Layer
Partitioning and clustering strategy
Every table above about 10 GB is partitioned, usually by event date, and clustered by up to four columns in order of filter frequency, such as brand, store and SKU. We set require_partition_filter on large fact tables so a missing date filter fails rather than scanning 40 TB. Daily partitions suit most data; hourly partitions are reserved for high-volume streams queried within the day. We avoid sharded date-suffix tables, converting them to partitioned tables during migration.
On-demand versus editions and reservations
We export 14 to 30 days of INFORMATION_SCHEMA.JOBS and compute bytes billed and slot-milliseconds per workload. If monthly on-demand spend is spiky or above what roughly 100 to 200 baseline slots would cost, we move ELT and BI to Enterprise edition reservations with autoscaling and a small baseline, keeping ad-hoc data science on on-demand with custom quotas. Enterprise Plus is chosen only when compliance controls or cross-region disaster recovery specifically need it. One- or three-year commitments come after two months of stable usage.
Streaming semantics: BigQuery subscriptions versus Dataflow
Pub/Sub BigQuery subscriptions are the cheapest path when messages map one-to-one to rows and duplicates are tolerable or handled downstream. Dataflow is justified when events need deduplication by ID, event-time windows, joins with reference data or routing to multiple sinks. In Dataflow we use the Storage Write API with exactly-once semantics for financial or billing events, and at-least-once mode for telemetry where it is cheaper. Late data beyond the allowed lateness goes to a dead-letter table, not silently dropped.
Semantic layer: LookML, BigQuery views or both
When more than two teams consume the same metrics, we model them in LookML so revenue, ROAS or plant load factor have one definition with versioned changes through Git. Looker Studio connects to curated BigQuery views or to Looker's semantic model rather than raw tables. Where Looker licences are not justified, we create authorized views in a mart dataset as the semantic contract and restrict Looker Studio data sources to them.
Where BigQuery ML is enough and where it is not
BigQuery ML covers most analytics-adjacent modelling: ARIMA_PLUS for demand and generation forecasts with holiday effects, boosted trees for propensity, and anomaly detection on time series. It keeps data in place and lets analysts own the model. We move to the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform when models need custom training code, GPUs, feature serving at low latency or online endpoints for applications. Predictions from BigQuery ML are written to tables, which suits daily planning, not millisecond decisions.

What you receive
Governing BigQuery Data: Policy Tags, Row-Level Security, Authorized Views and Dataplex Catalog
Analytics platforms concentrate personal and commercial data that operational systems keep apart. The BigQuery security model works at four levels: dataset IAM, column-level policy tags with dynamic masking, row-level access policies and authorized views or datasets. Threat cases we design for are analysts joining PII with behavioural data beyond their purpose, Looker Studio reports shared to personal accounts and bulk exports to external projects.
- Policy tags with masking rules so phone numbers and emails appear hashed except to approved roles
- Row-level access policies restricting regional managers to their stores or plants
- Authorized views exposing only aggregated or masked data to BI tools
- VPC Service Controls around analytics projects to stop exports to outside projects
- Domain-restricted sharing so Looker Studio reports cannot be shared outside the organization
BigQuery Cost Model: On-Demand Bytes Scanned vs Edition Slots, Storage Billing and BI Engine Capacity
BigQuery bills compute and storage separately. Compute is either on-demand per TiB scanned, with the first 1 TiB per month free, or edition slot-hours with autoscaling and optional commitments. Storage is billed as active or long-term logical bytes, or as physical bytes if you switch the dataset billing model, which often helps for well-compressed data. Streaming inserts, Storage Write API, BI Engine capacity and Dataflow worker hours are additional meters.
- Partition filters and clustering to cut bytes scanned on large fact tables
- Edition reservations with low baseline and autoscaling for ELT and BI, on-demand with quotas for ad-hoc use
- Physical storage billing on datasets with high compression ratios
- Materialized views and BI Engine for repeated dashboard queries
- Pub/Sub BigQuery subscriptions instead of Dataflow for simple one-to-one feeds
BigQuery vs Snowflake vs a self-managed warehouse on VMs: which suits an India-based team on Google Cloud?
Use four criteria. Integration: BigQuery is native to Google Cloud, so GA4 exports, Google Ads transfers, Pub/Sub subscriptions, Datastream and Looker connect without connectors, while Snowflake on Google Cloud needs more plumbing. Operations: both BigQuery and Snowflake remove cluster patching; a self-managed warehouse on Compute Engine only makes sense for licensing lock-in or extreme customization. Cost model: BigQuery offers both bytes-scanned and slot pricing, so spiky exploration and steady ELT can use different models; Snowflake bills per warehouse-second. Residency: BigQuery datasets can be pinned to asia-south1 or asia-south2. If most data already lives on Google Cloud, BigQuery is the default; Snowflake fits multi-cloud data sharing needs.

Data & Analytics on Google Cloud: Frequently Asked Questions
Should we use BigQuery on-demand pricing or buy edition slots?
Start on-demand, measure, then decide. On-demand bills per TiB scanned and suits small or unpredictable workloads. Once scheduled ELT and dashboards make spend steady, Enterprise edition reservations with autoscaling are usually cheaper and capped. NTSPL analyses INFORMATION_SCHEMA.JOBS for two to four weeks and models both options; most mid-size clients end up with reservations for pipelines and BI and on-demand with quotas for exploration.
How do we migrate from an on-prem SQL Server or Oracle warehouse to BigQuery?
Migrate by subject area, not all at once. NTSPL uses the BigQuery Migration Service for SQL translation, Datastream or batch exports for data, and validates row counts and key aggregates between old and new for every table. Reports are repointed in waves, with the old warehouse kept read-only for one or two month-end closes before decommissioning. A typical 5 to 15 TB warehouse moves in 10 to 16 weeks.
Can BigQuery data stay in India for DPDP compliance?
Yes. Datasets are created in a specific location, such as asia-south1 Mumbai or asia-south2 Delhi, and data stays there; an Organization Policy location constraint prevents datasets elsewhere. NTSPL avoids the US or EU multi-regions for personal data and checks that linked services, such as Dataflow job regions and Looker instance location, also use India regions.
Do we need Looker, or is Looker Studio enough?
Looker Studio is enough when a few teams build reports on curated tables and occasional inconsistency is tolerable. Choose Looker when many teams share metrics, definitions must be version-controlled in LookML, or you embed analytics in a customer-facing product. A common pattern is Looker for finance and leadership metrics and Looker Studio for departmental reports on authorized views.
How fresh can BigQuery data be?
Seconds for streaming and minutes for database change capture. Pub/Sub BigQuery subscriptions and the Storage Write API make rows queryable almost immediately, and Datastream typically lands changes within minutes based on its staleness setting. NTSPL sets freshness per table, because near-real-time ingestion costs more and many finance tables only need hourly or daily updates.
Can analysts build forecasts without a data science team?
Yes, for many cases. BigQuery ML lets analysts train ARIMA_PLUS forecasting, classification and anomaly detection models with SQL on warehouse tables. NTSPL sets up templates, evaluation queries and scheduled retraining so forecasts for demand, generation or footfall refresh automatically. Custom deep-learning models still belong on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.
